Procaine hcl (procaine hydrochloride) is the active ingredient in Vitacel GH3 through Vitacel 9 dietary supplements. 4. WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF Gerovital H3 and Vitacel GH3-7-8-9 AND PROCAINE HCL?
As with many of the great scientific advances of history, GH3 was discovered by accident. The active ingredient of GH3 is procaine HCL, a local anesthetic developed in 1905 by Doctor Alfred Einhorn, a German scientist. Over the years, doctors using procaine HCL began to notice regenerative antiaging effects: arthritis disappeared in some patients, hair regrew or recolored and skin quality improved. However, the numbing effect of procaine hcl leads the body to trigger cholinesterase, an enzyme, which breaks the procaine down and ejects it from the cells in about one hour.
During the 1950’s,Doctor Ana Aslan, a gerontologist and director of the Bucharest Institute of Geriatrics in Romania, was the first to recognize that these discovered anti-aging regenerative effects of procaine hcl might be extended if the procaine were stabilized so that it would not "attack" the body cells with a numbing effect. 4. ARE Vitacel GH3-7-8-9 DRUGS OR VITAMINS?
Vitacel GH3-7-8-9 are not classified as a drug but is a complexed vitamin C compound, since it is composed of two B vitamins. It does not replace other vitamins however, because the processing of the product makes these vitamins behave differently than other Vitamins. It is a Dietary Supplement and is regulated as such.
Chemically, procaine the active ingredient in GH3, is the PABA ester of the amino alcohol DEAE. PABA (p-amino-benzoic acid), is a "B" Vitamin. DEAE, (Diethylaminoethanol) is a biologically active precursor of the "B" Vitamin Choline. Procaine is usually used in the form of the hydrochloride salt, Procaine HCl, because it is highly water soluble. Procaine Hydrochloride, when taken orally, enters the body by being mainly absorbed through the villi in the small intestine. Experiments show that the bulk of the procaine hcl enters the bloodstream molecularly intact. In the blood stream procaine HCl is rapidly hydrolyzed by the enzyme pseudo-cholinesterase into PABA and DEAE the two components of the procaine molecule. These metabolites are removed by the liver, chemically changed, and excreted in the urine.

5. WHAT IS THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT IN VITACEL SUPPLEMENTS?
Procaine, the active ingredient of GH3, is composed of two naturally occurring B vitamins known as PABA (Paramino Benzoic Acid) and DEAE (Diethyl Amino Ethanol). PABA stimulates the production of Folic Acid and Vitamins K and B1, while DEAE helps make Choline and Acetylcholine, vital in nerve function and proper cellular functioning.

Dr. Koch developed a process for producing the GH3 factor and then incorporating it into tablets that he named Vitacel 3. This GH3 factor or Benzoate double salt of Procaine contains Benzoic Acid which has no beneficial effect except to stabilize the Procaine and since Benzoic Acid can be an allergen federal law limits the amount of benzoates that can be added to foods etc. The amount of Benzoic Acid in the original GH3 only protects 15% of the procaine hcl.
