H3 In the battle against old age
Old age is different for every person and culture. Generally speaking we reach old age when our regenerative functions begin to decline. As we reach old age we become more prone to degenerative disease, and our immune function begins to diminish.
Old age is generally associated with wrinkled skin, decreased mobility, reduced lung function, grey hair and hair loss, reduced hearing eyesight capacity, increase susceptibility to injury from falls. Also common in old age are the degenerative effects of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis on bodily joints.
Mental capacity can also be affected by old age. Common degenerative cognitive conditions include Alzheimer’s, parkinson’s and dementia.
How to beat old age
Aside from the obvious, like good nutritious diet and regular exercise. What can be done to beat back old age and to age gracefully?
Stretching muscles and tendons
Body stretching can take many forms and methods, the importance of staying limber cannot be emphasized enough. As we age our tendons and muscles shorten and become tighter and tighter. Things like yoga, tai chi and simple slow moving stretching programs can counteract the effect of old age on our physiology.
Weak unused muscles begin to atrophy and build up collagen. This becomes more pronounced in old age. The only way to counter act the effect of this progressive degeneration of muscle as we age is to incorporate resistant type exercise. This can involve simple weight bearing exercises, rubber bands or weight lifting machines. It is important to start slow and work your way up to a regular routine of resistance training.
Most people do not get enough sleep which in turn speeds up the aging process. The regenerative effects of sleep are critical for aging gracefully.
Diet and old age
Stay hydrated…to prevent premature old age and disease. Most people in our society simply do not drink enough
. As a general rule try to drink 4-8 glasses of water depending on your activity level. Avoid processed foods and meats, eat plenty of fiber rich foods such as fruits and vegetables. Eat smaller meals and snacks rather that a few large meals during the day.
Anti aging supplements
There has been much debate on whether supplements and vitamins can help beat old age. In recent studies at McMaster university in Canada, research fed a mix of supplements to one group of mice compare to the other receiving a normal diet. What they found was astounding, the group of mice being fed the supplements looked and behaved much like young animals throughout the experiment.
List of supplements used in experiment:
Vitamin B3 (niacin) -
Green tea extract-
Vitamin C -
Cod liver oil (Omega 3)-
Ginger root extract-
Flax seed oil
